Arthouse Disney

About the Column

Disney images inspire artistic interpretation. That's a mouthful! It means that the web teems with artwork of Disney but not by Disney. The artists of Arthouse Disney are hand-picked for their creative, sometimes quirky, but always masterful interpretations of classic Disney art, iconic Disney scenes, or familiar Disney characters. Each column has an introduction by Bob McLain and often a few words from the artist. But it's not the words that matter so much here as it is the pictures.

Mickey Double Ear Hat

The mark of a true artist, at least if you go in for stereotypes, is a beret. Chris Taylor is a true artist, but he doesn't bother with berets (he don't need no stinkin' berets!). His hat of choice is his own design: Mickey Ears, with extra ears.

In today's edition of Arthouse Disney, Chris Taylor presents a fantastic design concept for a new Mickey Ear hat. Double the ears, double the fun!

As Chris tells it:

"During our last visit to Disney World, I noticed how many Mickey Ear hats had little, tiny hats on top like a top hat, mortar board, Sorcerer's hat, and so on. So, the family and I were talking on our last day, and I said, 'Wouldn't it be funny to have a set of ears with another little set of ears on top? And my bride said, 'Why don't you make some?'

"So I did. The whole idea being: how would Mickey look wearing Mickey ears?

"I do all of my design work in Adobe Illustrator, and have a decent collection of Disney vector art. The trick was finding the right ears and semicircle. It took me a while to get the ears to match what you can get in the Parks. Then it was a question of what color to make the smaller hat (Mickey Red, of course). And there you have it:"

I'd buy one of those!

Quite a few folks at Disney read the Dispatch, so folks at Disney: pass along this article to the people who scout new merchandise and tell 'em Chris is waiting to hear from you!
