Learn More About:

  • At a Disney Park, when you get right down to it, every hour is a happy hour, but liquor makes those hours happier. With few exceptions, such as the Magic Kingdom, the booze flows freely everywhere in the House of Mouse, and many of the spirited concoctions you'll find at Disney you won't find when you get back home. We'll cast bleary eye over some of those concoctions. We'll also stumble through Disney's immense wine list, and in moments of proletarian pride, we'll mumble over the Mouse's beer, too. Because in some Disney Park, right now, someone's drunk!

  • Bob McLain is not an alcoholic. He is, however, addicted to Disney, and since Disney offers such a vast array of beer, wine, and cocktails, his addiction must (it's a rule!) encompass alcohol, too. Over the years, as part of his important research, Bob has tried nearly everything Disney can mix and pour, and he figures that the money spent on booze at Disney could have put his son through bartending school. He writes this column with an uncapped bottle of bourbon and the devil's eyes.

English Rose

The Rose & Crown Pub in the United Kingdom Pavilion of the World Showcase may be best-known for its fish and chips, but it's not the fish I fancy, especially on chilly nights - rather, it's a comely lass known to her sloshy faithful as English Rose.

The English Rose is a crisp, refreshing cocktail served at EPCOT's Rose & Crown Pub.

Possibly named after the Tudor Rose, an English heraldic emblem, the drink is mixed with Beefeater gin, apricot brandy, sweet vermouth, pineapple, and orange and cranberry juice. For that authentic English pub feel, it comes in a souvenir cup.

The alcohol in gin is flavored with juniper berries, which give it a crisp, slightly tart flavor. Beefeater Gin is distilled not only with juniper berries but also with coriander seeds, almonds, oranges, lemon peel, and a few other botanicals. The Beefeater brand, though well-known, is not top quality gin: if it were a beer, it'd be Budweiser.

Gin is essential for traditional martinis, but even if you don't like martinis, you might like the English Rose, because the taste of the gin is blanketed beneath the other ingredients. All that apricot brandy and fruit juice take away a bit of the bite.

Having a go with English Rose will set you back $10.50. The souvenir cup is yours to keep, and Rose won't mind if you use it later for ginger ale.

If you'd like to whip (up) English Rose at home, here's the recipe:

  • 2 oz Gin
  • 2 oz Apricot Brandy
  • 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 2 oz Orange Juice
  • 1 oz Pineapple Juice
  • 1 oz Cranberry Juice

Don't forget the cranberry juice! It gives Rose her rosy glow.
