About the Column

Is it possible to have too many Disney tips? Well, yes, if they're from your crazy uncle Louie, but not if they're straight from the experts, the folks who plan perfect trips for others day-in, day-out: Disney travel agents! Keith Anderson, an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner and co-owner of Mouseketrips, has been doing that for years. He's learned a lot about Disney, especially how to save money on a Disney vacation without skimping on the frills or the thrills. Every week, in Disney Travel Tips from Mouseketrips, Keith will distill new Disney wisdom - just for you! Don't tell Uncle Louie...

The Ride to Nowhere

Any Talking Heads fans in the audience? Keith Anderson's latest article, the Ride to Nowhere, doesn't travel the Road to Nowhere, but it does provide a unique set of tips for calming your crazy self at Disney World with three relaxing (head)trips...

Every so often, you need a break from the theme parks while at Disney World. You could retire to your room, but instead why not stay in the 'action' with a ride to nowhere, guaranteed to relax the adults but still entertain the kids.

The WDW transportation system includes buses, boats, monorails, trams, and just about every other mode of transportation invented. Many of the routes served are not necessarily the most efficient methods of getting around, but they are fun to take when you want a break from the parks.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  1. The monorail loop that serves the Magic Kingdom stops at three deluxe resorts (the Contemporary, Polynesian and Grand Floridian) as well as the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC). You can get off at each resort, walk around, grab a snack, and enjoy some downtime, or stay on-board for a few 'loops' until you're ready for the parks again. For a shorter ride, take the express monorail that stops only at the Magic Kingdom and the TTC.
  2. From the Magic Kingdom docks, you can board a small boat that serves the Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness. It's a relaxing ride with great views of Wilderness Lodge and the Contemporary from Bay Lake. There's rarely a long line, and the ride is especially fun after dark. When you dock at the Lodge, take the opportunity to walk around and enjoy its beauty.
  3. If you're at EPCOT, exit through the International Gateway between the Great Britain and France Pavilions, and then bear left to the dock for a boat that will take you to Hollywood Studios, with stops at the Yacht Club, BoardWalk, the Swan, and the Dolphin. If the weather is decent, take a seat on the open deck. On your way back to EPCOT, disembark on the BoardWalk for some candy or ice cream at Seashore Sweets, or a treat at the BoardWalk Bakery. You can easily walk back to EPCOT from the BoardWalk in a few minutes.

I love taking time away from the parks just to relax, and it helps my kids not to burn out too early in the day. Enjoy what Disney World has to offer: it is so much more than rides and pre-cooked hamburgers!

While you're waiting for Keith's next Disney tip, why not ask him to plan your next Disney trip? Mouseketrips does nothing but Disney - and they're really good at it! Hook up with them at their website, through Twitter, or on Facebook.
