About the Column

Not an minute passes without someone, somewhere, writing more stuff about Disney. I compile the better stuff in Disney Dispatch's daily (and frequently updated) Hullabaloo. But the really, really good stuff, the stuff that makes me smile when I read it, or scratch my head, or fume angrily that I didn't write it myself, well, that you'll find here, each night, usually with my snarky spin. No glass of milk. No cookie. Just a late night dose of Disney to lull you to slumber...

Bob tucks in the Mouse with stories about today's Disney news

Brian Elizardi, author of the daringly named Brian Elizardi's Blog, shares six things he learned from Disney that help him in his job as an academic advisor. His article is similar to one I published last year called What the Church Can Learn from Disney. In Brian's case, however, he's not saving souls but rather the academic future of his students. I love learning how people use Disney principles in areas where you'd think they might not apply. As it turns out, they seem to apply most everywhere! Nice job, Brian.

When I'm at Disney, I like to eat at bright light places like Boma and Crystal Palace, but I also enjoy meals in restaurants that never seem to be full and that never seem to command much attention among the Disney food crowd. One such place is Olivia's Cafe at Old Key West. Doobie and Rebekah of LaughingPlace ate there recently as part of their challenge to dine at every Disney World table-service restaurant during a twelve-month period. Their review of Olivia's Cafe is short and straightforward, nothing fancy about it, but it's nice to see Olivia get some attention.

I love to think about cooking. When I do cook, the results are often startling. John Saccheri, otherwise known as Chef Big Fat Panda, whipped up one of my favorites today on the Disney Food Blog: Boma's Coconut Curry Chicken Soup. I enjoy John's cooking articles because they're step-by-step, loaded with pictures, and sprinkled with interesting tidbits, such as his tips for buying curry powder, one of the essential spices in this soup. John has an open invitation to cook here anytime.

Doe Deere - possibly not her real name - is a self-proclaimed 'makeup enthusiast, entrepeneur, and fashionista'. Today she posted some pictures of herself at Disney World and I'll bet she got more attention in the parks than the characters. The one of her next to the giant lollipop definitely drew a crowd. It's nice to see people dressing up again to go out in public...

I've never wondered why Disney took over a decade to build the Disney Dream. Gene Sloan of USA Today did wonder about it, and his article in today's on-line edition of the paper has plenty of answers from Tom Staggs, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

Lou Lumenick of the New York Post thinks that Disney 'struck out' with Oscar nominations. John Frost of the Disney Blog thinks that Disney's Oscars nominations were 'not too shabby'. Isn't it amazing when two people can read the same set of facts and draw completely different conclusions? I'm going with Frost on this one. Lumenick just wanted the tawdry headline.

Speaking of tawdry, MousePlanet recently blew the lid off Disneyland's plan to sequester characters in meet 'n greets and not let them roam through the park. Why would Disneyland do that? To increase PhotoPass sales. I can't think of a more bone-headed, short-sighted, greed-powered move on Disney's part than to deprive people, especially kids, the thrill of seeing their favorite characters walking through the parks. Lots of people complained to Disney, and then Disney released a statement to 'clarify' the matter: in other words, they backed down in the face of a public hue and cry. Power to the people!
