I Fight in Heels

Chris Taylor takes a holiday, and that means we're treated to a special guest appearance by Roberta Rackraider, whose geeky love for belligerent Marvel super babes emblazoned on a Disney shirt shows the world she's ready to fight ... in her heels!

This isn't a new shirt, by any means. I first saw it last summer in Downtown Disney and at Mouse Gear in Epcot.

It's notable, of course, as Marvel merchandise being sold at Disney World, and it's also notable for its representation of strong females ready to kick your ass - in heels!

A slender gentleman, I suppose, could wriggle into it, but this shirt is meant for the ladies.

The trio of super-powered woman on the front of the shirt, left to right, are old-school Marvel characters:

  • The Scarlet Witch first appeared in 1964 as a villainess, but she soon gave up her evil ways and became a fixture as part of the Avengers. Not that long ago, she had a mental breakdown and scrambled reality.
  • Marvel Girl aka Jean Grey aka Phoenix first appeared in 1963 as one of the original X-Men, where she did much good until she changed into Dark Phoenix and tried to destroy the universe.
  • The Invisible Woman first appeared in 1961 as one of the Fantastic Four, where she was known as the Invisible Girl and mostly taken for granted until she learned that her powers make her the strongest member of the team.

The slogan on the shirt - 'I Fight in Heels' - is a puzzler, since virtually all super-powered characters fight in boots or a sturdy pair of shoes.

Fighting in heels seems a sure way to lose any fight, but the slogan certainly arouses more attention than 'I Fight in a Sturdy Pair of Shoes'.

It's interesting, but not surprising, that Marvel dressed the super-fems in their old, conservative costumes, even if the anatomy under those costumes is drawn a tad more realistically than it was in the old days.

And is it just me, or does the Scarlet Witch look like she's about to cry?

If you can't find the shirt at Disney World, or if you're not planning to be there any time soon, Amazon has it for $25, with free shipping.
