Mouse of Zen Monday

About the Column

A haiku is a highly structured poetic snippet consisting of three short phrases that together should trigger an image in your mind. You won't find haikus at Disney. You will find haikus about Disney every Monday on the Disney Dispatch written by JB Conway, author of the well-regarded book, Mouse of Zen, which of course is full of Disney haikus. What better way to step into your Disney week!

Wisps of Mickey [Mickey May #1]

At Disney, you're supposed to look up, look down, look all around for magic often missed. Disney poet JB Conway found some of that magic at his very feet one hot, sunny day in Disney World, and captured the moment in haiku.

The haiku theme for this month is Mickey May. Each week, JB Conway will evoke the Mouse in haiku. Maybe classic Mickey, maybe Sorceror Mickey, maybe Mickey in a manner unimagined.

Are you ready, kids?

The custodians at Disney World are in charge of more than just sweeping up; sometimes, they create a fleeting bit of magic themselves.

Instead of canvas, they use sidewalk; instead of brush, broom; instead of paint, water.

Their designs don't last long, and there's no telling when or where you'll see one.

JB's haiku paints its own picture. He imagines the water evaporating from 'street art' into barely visible wisps that still retain a slight bit of the magic that went into their creation.

These wisps, though misty, still manage a tiny bit of Mickey.

If you haven't bought JB's book, Mouse of Zen, and yet you come here each week to read his haikus, why do you torture yourself? Are you a masochist? (Or maybe a mouseochist?) Don't you know you can get all the haikus at once? In the book!
