Pink Ear Pixie

About the Column

Entering Disney World, especially for the first time, is like stepping foot in a foreign land. You have not months, not weeks, not even days to learn the geography, the culture, even the language. Next to your park pass, the most important thing to have in lieu of a local guide is park pointers: helpful, topical, practical advice about how to make the most of your temporary residence at Disney World. Amanda Sykora has been visiting Disney World for over thirty years, and as the Pink Ear Pixie, she dispenses practical pointers to enhance your experience and magnify your magic.

Disney's Special Events

Want to super-size that pixie dust? Attend a Disney special event! Amanda Sykora blurbs Disney's best special events from the current International Flower & Garden Festival at EPCOT to this year's upcoming holiday spectaculars.

Throughout the year there are multiple special events at Walt Disney World. Another example that Disney World is much more than a theme park!

In 2011 there are still several events yet to come.

Here are a few of my favorites.

International Flower & Garden Festival

Currently Epcot is hosting the International Flower & Garden Festival. Surround yourself with gorgeous flower displays and unique topiaries. There's also live music and educational programs. But you have to hurry as the 2011 Festival ends May 15!

Star Wars Weekends

Once the Flower & Garden Festival wraps up, Hollywood Studios offers Star Wars Weekends. These three day events feature special Star Wars activities and even Star Wars celebrities. And this year is even bigger as the NEW Star Tours - The Adventure Continues ride will be opening on May 20. Star Wars Weekends are scheduled to run Fridays through Saturdays on these dates:

  • May 20 to 22, 2011
  • May 27 to 29, 2011
  • June 3 to 5, 2011
  • June 10 to 12, 2011

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Later this year, the Magic Kingdom will be the place to find Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. The best part is ... it's 'not so scary!' Adults and children of all ages will enjoy this fun-filled event on specific nights in September and October 2011 (dates have not been announced yet). This is a separate ticket event and includes a special fireworks display, a parade, and even interaction with villains and characters that you do not typically see at Walt Disney World.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party

Another great event at the Magic Kingdom is Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. If you've never seen it snow in Florida, then consider attending Mickey's Party. With a special parade and complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, this event is magical!

Disney World is the place to celebrate all sorts of occasions. And these special events are only a few of the ones that Disney has to offer. For your next visit, check the Disney schedule and see what may be taking place during your stay.

Who wouldn't want to add some extra magic to their vacation?

Need more pointers? Come back next week, or get in touch with Amanda herself at her travel agency, Pixie and Pirate Destinations, where she'll answer all your questions, book your next trip, and possibly sprinkle a bit of (pink) pixie dust on your tickets!
