Running with the Mouse

About the Column

Disney travel experts agree on one thing: relax, take your time. But when it comes to Disney's marathons and other running events, they're wrong. In a race, you can't take your time. And you also can't show up with just your two feet expecting to win - or even finish! Preparing for a Disney marathon requires discipline, hard work, and good advice. We can't help you with the discipline or the hard work. But Robert Mathis, owner of DisneyRunning and one of the few people designated by Disney as 'Perfectly Goofy' for his frequent participation in their running events (since 1996!), has lots of good advice. So relax, take your time, and read his weekly column.

Tinker Bell Half Marathon

Hey, guys: good news and bad news. Bad news first. The Tinker Bell Half Marathon is 'geared for women'. Good news: you're still allowed to register! Hello? Guys? Regardless, as Roberta Racy writes, fairies fleet of feet will not want to miss this event.

Disney announced this morning a new half marathon event in Anaheim 'geared for women': the Tinker Bell Half Marathon.

I don't think Disney has a marathon 'geared for men', since that would be sexist, but men will be happy (or maybe embarrassed) to know that they can register for the Tinker Bell marathon. As Disney puts it, they are 'allowed' to register, which translated means 'men, stay the hell out of this event'.

The 13.1 mile race winds through both Disneyland and the historic streets of Anaheim, with everyone who completes the course limping away with a Tinker Bell-inspired Finisher Medal.

Disney appointed Megyn Price from the CBS show "Rules of Engagement" as runner #1 in the marathon. (No reason given.)

The first Tinker Bell Half Marathon kicks off at 5:45 AM, January 29, 2012. It's part of Tinker Bell weekend, a three-day event that includes a 5k race, kids' races, and an expo. If you register now, you'll pay $120. Make sure you're serious: once you register, your money is non-refundable.

Disney's official site for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon has details (and lots of rules) that you'll want to read carefully.
