Running with the Mouse

About the Column

Disney travel experts agree on one thing: relax, take your time. But when it comes to Disney's marathons and other running events, they're wrong. In a race, you can't take your time. And you also can't show up with just your two feet expecting to win - or even finish! Preparing for a Disney marathon requires discipline, hard work, and good advice. We can't help you with the discipline or the hard work. But Jennifer Lazzaro, who not only runs in marathons but writes about them on her own popular site, EatSleepRun Disney, can help you with lots of good advice.

Disney's Coast-to-Coast Race Challenge

If you're a Disney runner, one of the things on your bucket list is probably the Coast-to-Coast Race Challenge. To do it, you must run races both at Disneyland and Disney World. But the rules recently changed. For the better? Let's ask Jennifer.

You're probably familiar with all of the races held at Disney World and Disneyland, but have you heard of the Coast-to-Coast Race Challenge? According to runDisney, it's the "ultimate test in endurance with a Disney twist."

Originally, to qualify, you had to run a race on both coasts in the same calendar year: either the Walt Disney World Marathon, Half Marathon or Princess Half Marathon, plus the Disneyland Half Marathon. Those who did so would receive an additional medal on top of the ones previously earned.

The beautiful new medal features the Partners' statue.

When runDisney announced the first annual Tinkerbell Half Marathon in Disneyland, scheduled for January 2012, many people wondered if they would change their Coast-to-Coast requirements.

Stop wondering. They did!

You now can run in any half marathon, full marathon, or Goofy Challenge, in ANY order, and still qualify for Coast-to-Coast.

These are the two requirements you must fulfill:

Complete one of the following runDisney Races at the Walt Disney World Resort:

  • Walt Disney World Marathon
  • Walt Disney World Marathon Relay
  • Walt Disney World Half Marathon
  • Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge
  • Disney's Princess Half Marathon
  • Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon

Complete one of the following runDisney Races at Disneyland Resort:

  • Tinker Bell Half Marathon
  • Disneyland Half Marathon

A disclaimer limits each runner to earning only one medal per calendar year, which means that the truly crazy Disney runners can't earn the medal each time they travel to the opposite coast for a race.

Another disclaimer excludes those who run in the Wine & Dine Half Marathon Relay, since in that race neither you nor your teammate is running a full 13.1 miles.

I hope this is but the start of of bigger running challenges from runDisney. The Rock n' Roll race series has a Heavy Medal Challenge where you can win an additional medal for EACH new race you complete in a calendar year. The thought of running EVERY big Disney race and getting rewarded for it with a new medal EVERY time is tempting.

My wallet will surely hate me but... I'm up for the challenge!
