Vinylmation My Way

About the Column

The real action in Vinylmation these days is creating your own. Disney sells blank Vinylmations for you to craft into virtually anyone or anything. Thousands of these custom creations exist. Some are, well, it's best not to say what they are, but many are outstanding: often as good as what you can buy from Disney. We're rounding up the best custom Vinylmations and presenting them here, three times each week, with a word or two of commentary from their designers.

The Death Star

Celeste takes Mickey to the Dark Side

Celeste isn't playing games. No cute little characters for her. She has taken Mickey places where Minnie never could. In space, they never hear you squeak - unless you're aboard Mickey's awesome vinyl Death Star.

Here's Celeste on why and how she designed her Death Star custom:

Foremost, I am a huge fan of Star Wars, and so of course, I had to pick up the Vinylmation set.

I wanted to create the Death Star a while back, but never could come up with the right look for it.

One day, as I was rearranging my Star Wars set, I felt it was missing something - the Death Star!

So I decided to create it.

I had so many concepts for the Death Star, but in the end decided to go with a simpler version.

One side depicts the Death Star in its full glory, while the other side shows the damaged version floating aimlessly in the depths of space.

It is fully hand painted using artist-grade acrylics. To craft it, I used a foam-like board that I cut, sanded, and then painted.

At the moment, I'm starting another version of the Death Star with major additions. Stay tuned.

Bob's Bottom Line

Those of you who like Celeste's work are in luck: she's accepting commissions.

Celeste says that she can design any custom that you can imagine.

I believe it!

Check out her blog for examples of her many Vinylmation customs.

Some of my favorites are Hellboy, the Rocketeer, and a fantastic Santa complete with an elf who pops out of a Christmas canister.

Now you know what to get your Vinyl-crazed buddy for his (or her) next birthday!
